Turkish Coastal Safety successfully intervened to prevent an LPG tanker from grounding near Büyükada, averting a potential environmental disaster.
The LPG-loaded vessel "BITIHI 2" lost control due to a mechanical failure while sailing off the coast of Istanbul and began drifting towards the shores of Büyükada. Fortunately, the timely intervention of the Turkish Coastal Safety averted a potential environmental disaster.
ISTANBUL - Frightening moments unfolded in the Sea of Marmara today as the LPG tanker lost power due to a technical failure in the engine room while in transit, causing it to drift towards Büyükada under the influence of the current.
A BREATHTAKING OPERATION JUST METERS FROM THE ISLAND
According to information obtained, the "BITIHI 2" experienced a mechanical failure for an undetermined reason, either before passing through the Bosphorus or during its journey in the Marmara Sea. The massive vessel lost control and did not respond to the helm, veering dangerously towards the shores of Büyükada due to the effects of wind and current.
Upon receiving an emergency call for help from the ship's captain, who noticed the vessel was drifting, the General Directorate of Coastal Safety (KEGM) immediately mobilized the Istanbul Vessel Traffic Services Center. The nearest vessel, the KURTARMA-9 tugboat, was swiftly dispatched to the scene.
The KURTARMA-9 tugboat reached the drifting ship just before it was about to run aground, causing panic as it was visible from the shore of Büyükada. Thanks to the dedicated efforts and successful maneuvers of the Coastal Safety teams, the drifting vessel was secured with a tow line.
The potential grounding of the ship or the possibility of a collision, given that it was carrying a dangerous and flammable cargo like LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas), posed a significant risk and raised the prospect of a major disaster scenario for Istanbul. However, the calm intervention of the expert teams prevented this scenario from materializing.
After the initial intervention, the BITIHI 2 was brought under control and safely towed to the Tuzla Anchorage Area with the escort of the KURTARMA-9 tugboat. It was reported that the vessel was anchored there, and technical teams would begin inspections to resolve the mechanical failure.
In a statement regarding the incident, the General Directorate of Coastal Safety indicated that there was no environmental pollution or loss of life.
