Iran's IRGC has seized the Epaminondas for US port call violations, following a dramatic incident in the Strait of Hormuz, reports PortNews.
Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has detained the Liberia-flagged containership Epaminondas in the Strait of Hormuz, citing repeated calls at US ports and breaches of navigation rules, reports Saint Petersburg's PortNews.
The seizure followed an incident on 22 April when IRGC forces opened fire on the vessel and boarded it during transit through the Strait, one of the world's most critical oil and container shipping corridors. The ship was subsequently taken under Iranian control.
Tasnim reported that the IRGC alleged the vessel ignored warnings and was suspected of links to the US military, citing its port call history over the past six months. Greek shipmanager Technomar Shipping confirmed that armed forces boarded the vessel after it came under fire, with all crew reported safe.
Greek media, citing UK Maritime Trade Operations, said the vessel was approached by an IRGC gunboat without prior VHF contact before shots were fired, causing significant damage to the bridge. No injuries or pollution have been confirmed.
Ship-tracking data identifies Epaminondas as a 1998-built containership sailing under the Liberian flag. It was en route to Mundra, India, at the time of the incident. Reports indicated that the vessel was escorted toward Iranian waters following the boarding.
Technomar Shipping is a Greece-based ship management company. Public registries list Technomar Shipping Inc-Lib as the ISM manager of Epaminondas, while Kalmar Maritime LLC is recorded as the registered owner.
