Intel invests EUR5 billion ($5.7 billion) in Ireland to enhance AI chip production, aligning with rising global demand and EU's Chips Act.

Intel will invest EUR5 billion (US$5.7 billion) to expand its manufacturing site in County Kildare, Ireland, aiming to meet surging global demand for artificial intelligence and high-performance computing, reports Taiwan's CommonWealth Magazine.

The project will upgrade Intel's 3 silicon wafer capacity, described as Europe's most advanced semiconductor facility, and link it with other factories at the campus, Intel's European manufacturing base. It will also advance R&D and retrain staff.

The announcement comes as demand for AI data center chips continues to rise, prompting semiconductor firms to boost capacity. The EU's Chips Act is designed to expand domestic manufacturing and reduce reliance on foreign suppliers.

Intel executive vice president Naga Chandrasekaran said the investment ensures 'that Ireland remains at the forefront of the world's most advanced manufacturing ecosystems.'

The expansion will scale production of flagship Xeon server processors and strengthen research and development activities.

Analysts noted the transport implications of the investment, with increased semiconductor output expected to intensify high-value air cargo flows from Ireland to Europe and North America. Carriers such as FedEx, DHL, and Cargolux are likely to benefit from rising demand for dedicated freighter capacity.

The project will also reshape inbound logistics, as raw materials for chip production move through Ireland's ports and airports. The EU's Chips Act is expected to shift transport patterns by boosting intra-European semiconductor shipments and reducing reliance on transpacific supply chains.
