China's second largest chipmaker, Hua Hong Group, has achieved a breakthrough in advanced chip manufacturing that could be used to produce artificial intelligence chips, reported Reuters.
Four people familiar with the matter said Hua Hong's contract chipmaking unit, Huali Microelectronics, is preparing a 7-nanometre process at its Shanghai plant. This development would make Hua Hong the second Chinese chipmaker to reach such a level of technology.
The advancement marks a significant step in Beijing's drive for greater self-sufficiency in semiconductors. Hua Hong is China's second largest chipmaker after Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp.
Reuters reported that it could not confirm how Hua Hong achieved this capability, its production efficiency, or which suppliers were involved. The company's progress in 7 nm chipmaking has not been previously reported.
