HMM orders 10 new container ships from HD Hyundai, valued at $553 million, enhancing its fleet by 2028.
It has been reported that HMM, one of South Korea's leading container shipping companies, has placed an order for new container ships with HD Hyundai Heavy Industries.
According to shipping agency sources, HMM is behind the order of 10 container ships announced by HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, with a total value of 823.7 billion South Korean won (approximately 553 million dollars).
Each of the vessels will be valued at approximately 55 million dollars and will have a capacity of 2,800 TEU, with deliveries planned to be completed by December 2028.
If the order is finalized, it will add a new link to HMM's fleet expansion strategy, which is being pursued across different segments.
The company had previously ordered 13,000 TEU capacity, dual-fuel LNG-powered container ships from Korean shipyards, expected to be delivered by the end of 2024. Eight of these vessels are to be delivered to HD Hyundai shipyards, including the Samho facility, while a contract has been signed with Hanwha Ocean for four ships. Deliveries of this series are expected to be completed by the first half of 2029.
HMM is also continuing its operations in China. The company is reportedly in agreement for smaller-scale feeder ship orders with Huanghai Shipbuilding, covering vessels with capacities of 1,800 TEU and 3,000 TEU.
According to Alphaliner data, HMM ranks eighth among the world's largest container shipping companies, with a fleet consisting of over 90 vessels and a total capacity slightly above 1 million TEU. In addition to container shipping, the company is also active in dry bulk, tanker, automobile, and LPG transportation sectors.
