HJ Shipbuilding & Construction has secured an additional order for two 10,100 TEU eco-friendly containerships worth US$250 million from a European shipowner, reported Seoul Economic Daily.

The contract raises the total number of vessels of the same design to four, boosting productivity and profitability through repeat construction. The ships are the largest that can be built at the Yeongdo Shipyard in Busan, based on HJ Shipbuilding's expanded 7,700 to 9,000 TEU model.

The vessels feature high-efficiency designs that maximize deck and cargo hold space while ensuring process safety. They are equipped with scrubbers and an alternative maritime power system, enabling them to shut down engines and use shore electricity while docked, in line with IMO environmental rules.

HJ Shipbuilding expects efficiency gains from building identical ships consecutively, improving design, procurement, and production processes. Shipowners also favor sister ships for easier management and operations.

The company has also developed an LNG dual-fuel propulsion model for the same hull form to meet future demand. Chief executive Mr. Yoo Sang-chul said the shipyard has laid the foundation to consecutively build large eco-friendly containerships of 10,000 TEU or more and will pursue selective orders focused on profitability and timely delivery.
