HEATHROW Airport will close one of its two runways for the next few weeks for the preparatory work to begin as passenger traffic continues to decline, reports to London's Air Cargo News

HEATHROW Airport will close one of its two runways for the next few weeks for the preparatory work to begin as passenger traffic continues to decline, reports to London's Air Cargo News. Passenger traffic was down 95 per cent in June compared to the previous year because of the introduction of quarantine rules that results in a 10 per cent occupancy cut. The numbers are barely an improvement compared to April and May.

'While the announcement of so-called travel corridors taking in 74 countries holds out some hope for a recovery in demand, efforts to remove the quarantine completely need to be stepped up,' said Heathrow CEO John Holland-Kaye.

Meanwhile, Britain??s Airport Operators Association demanded a 12-month business-rate holiday for England and Wales.

British airports have paid more than GBP70 million (US$88 million) in rates since March despite the lockdown.
