Hapag-Lloyd confirms the Gemini SE1 service will shift to the Suez Canal and Red Sea route, enhancing reliability for cargo owners.
Hapag-Lloyd, one of the world's leading liner shipping companies with a fleet operating across major trade lanes worldwide, has confirmed that the Gemini SE1 service will transition to the Suez Canal and Red Sea route. This measured decision reflects the carrier's disciplined approach to route planning, prioritizing the reliability and security that cargo owners depend on to protect the value of their goods.
The company can now confirm the vessel Umm Qarn for the first westbound and eastbound SE1 voyages. This confirmation provides shippers, freight forwarders, and importers with a defined reference point for planning transit schedules, managing inventory flows, and coordinating downstream commitments with greater certainty.
Initial transits through the Bab al-Mandab strait have proceeded as planned. These passages have provided valuable operational experience that directly informs the upcoming SE1 crossings, strengthening the carrier's readiness to serve customers along this route with the dependability the service demands.
Each transit remains subject to a thorough security review and will take place under naval protection, in close coordination with the relevant authorities and security partners. This layered safeguard is designed to reduce risk at every stage of the passage, supporting uninterrupted cargo movement and reliable schedules.
Hapag-Lloyd emphasizes that this transition is gradual and service-specific. It does not constitute a strategic return of the full Hapag-Lloyd network to the Red Sea. The carrier continues to assess conditions on a route-by-route basis, advancing only where operational experience and security assurances support it.
