Hapag-Lloyd and Wan Hai adjust AA7 service, changing Shanghai calls to biweekly, impacting cargo flow to U.S. East Coast ports.

The AA7 Asia-U.S. East Coast service, jointly operated by Hapag-Lloyd and Wan Hai, has recently adjusted its port call arrangements for Shanghai and Ningbo. According to 'Container News', Shanghai calls on the AA7 service will shift from weekly calls to once every two weeks, alternating with Ningbo. This means cargo from Shanghai moving to the U.S. East Coast via AA7 will have fewer weekly sailing options.

The AA7 service currently deploys 13 vessels ranging in size from about 6,500 TEU to 13,500 TEU. After the adjustment, the port rotation will be: Shanghai/Ningbo - Taipei - Yantian - Shekou - Cai Mep - Singapore - Colombo - Newark - Norfolk - Charleston - Savannah - Shanghai/Ningbo. Shanghai and Ningbo will no longer both maintain weekly calls; instead, they will alternate on a biweekly basis. Colombo will also be called on the Ningbo sailings.

It should be clarified that AA7 is not canceling Shanghai calls altogether. Rather, the original weekly Shanghai coverage is being split between Shanghai and Ningbo, with alternating calls used to maintain network coverage for both ports. From a service design perspective, this arrangement may relate to capacity deployment among East China ports, aiming to balance cargo volume between the two ports, improve vessel berthing efficiency, and also meet export demand from Ningbo and surrounding areas.

Based on Hapag-Lloyd's recent operational information, AA7 has indeed seen several schedule and port call changes. In its Week 41 Asia & Oceania Operational Update, Hapag-Lloyd stated that WAN HAI A08 would omit Shanghai; TEMPANOS would omit Ningbo and Colombo; WAN HAI A18 would omit Colombo; and TUBUL would phase out in Shanghai and be replaced by TEMPANOS in Week 42. These adjustments apply to specific vessels and voyages. Hapag-Lloyd still lists AA7 as an Asia-U.S. East Coast service, and both Shanghai and Ningbo remain within the service port coverage.

For cargo moving from Shanghai to the U.S. East Coast, the most direct impact is the reduced frequency of Shanghai sailings on AA7. Previously, Shanghai had weekly calls. If the service now operates on an alternating biweekly basis, freight forwarders booking on AA7 will need to confirm whether a specific voyage actually calls at Shanghai. If cargo is time-sensitive, the interval between Shanghai and Ningbo sailings may affect cutoff times, trucking arrangements, and downstream schedule connections.

It is particularly worth noting that AA7 covers major U.S. East Coast ports including Newark, Norfolk, Charleston, and Savannah. With the change in Shanghai call frequency, customers that previously relied on this service for East Coast shipments may need to rematch their shipping dates or assess the feasibility of routing cargo via Ningbo. For forwarders that regularly use AA7, it is advisable to verify vessel name, voyage number, and port call details shipment by shipment during booking, and to incorporate the alternating Shanghai/Ningbo pattern into shipping plans to avoid cargo rollovers or rerouting caused by schedule changes.

At present, the main change to AA7 appears to be the way port coverage is shared between Shanghai and Ningbo. Specific schedules should still be based on the carrier's published voyage arrangements.
