İMEAK Chamber of Shipping addresses global maritime issues and tourism season at May meeting in Istanbul, highlighting key economic impacts.

During the May meeting of the İMEAK Chamber of Shipping Assembly, developments in global maritime markets, sectoral regulations, and assessments regarding the maritime tourism season were highlighted. The meeting, held in Istanbul, was chaired by Deputy Assembly President Emin Eminoğlu, as the Chairman of the Board, Tamer Kıran, was unable to attend due to the TOBB General Assembly taking place in Ankara.

Concerns Over the Strait of Hormuz

In his remarks, Vice Chairman of the Board Recep Düzgit drew attention to the impacts of developments in the global economy on maritime trade. He noted that the inability to take concrete steps towards the safe reopening of the Strait of Hormuz following the Trump-Xi meeting in China has increased risks in energy and food supply chains. Düzgit expressed that the tensions in the Middle East have created uncertainty in global shipping markets.

Düzgit stated that the security issues arising around the Strait of Hormuz following attacks by the US and Israel on Iran have negatively affected maritime transportation. He reported that in April, there was a 2.3% year-on-year decline in global maritime shipping volume. He pointed out that the shift towards alternative routes has increased ton-mile demand.

    Evaluation of New Regulations

The meeting also emphasized that the 'Ship Agents Regulation,' which will come into effect on May 14, 2026, contains significant regulations for the sector. It was noted that the 'Draft Regulation on Technical Rules for Ships,' prepared by the General Directorate of Maritime Affairs, has been opened for the opinions of sector representatives.

    The Maritime Tourism Season Begins

Düzgit stated that the 2026 maritime tourism season will begin with the Eid al-Adha holiday and expressed his hope for the new season to be productive for the sector. Lastly, Erhan Aslanoğlu provided evaluations regarding the Turkish and global economies during the meeting.
