The Turkish maritime community mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished figures, Ruhi Duman, who passed away on Wednesday, December 18. A funeral service will be held on Friday, December 20, following the midday prayer at Karacaahmet Şakirin Mosque, Istanbul.
A Pioneer in Turkish Maritime Industry
Ruhi Duman dedicated his life to advancing Turkey’s maritime sector, leaving an indelible mark on the industry. As a founding member of Duman Denizcilik Sanayi ve Ticaret A.Ş., he played a key role in shaping the country’s maritime operations. In 1994, he established Duman Gemicilik ve Ticaret A.Ş., which became a renowned name in ship management and international shipping services.
From 2004 to 2012, he served as the President of the Turkish Shipowners and Agents Association (VDA). In 2012, he took on the role of Chairman of the VDA Advisory Board, continuing his advocacy for the maritime sector. Known for his innovative approach and problem-solving capabilities, Duman was a true champion of Turkish shipping, addressing complex industry challenges with integrity and determination.

Duman’s leadership extended beyond business; he was a steadfast advocate for ethical practices and fairness in the maritime industry. One notable instance was in 2008 when he stood against unfounded allegations of currency smuggling aimed at shipping agents, defending the integrity of the sector.
