Explosions reported in the Strait of Hormuz as Iran claims to have shot down an enemy drone, escalating tensions with U.S. forces in the region.
Following numerous social media posts regarding explosions along Iran's Hormuz Strait coastline, the semi-official Fars News Agency claimed that Iranian forces shot down an 'enemy drone' over the Persian Gulf.
According to the Fars News Agency, a 'system with stealth capabilities' was used to down the drone. The agency noted that the nature of the air defense system in question remains classified.
Fars's claims have not been verified by independent sources. However, many social media accounts in Iran reported hearing a series of explosions around Bandar Abbas, Jask, and Sirik.
Some Iran-linked channels alleged that a limited confrontation occurred overnight in the Hormuz Strait between U.S. forces and the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Navy, resulting in the deaths of four Iranian soldiers.
Al Jazeera reporter Ali Hashem, citing an Iranian source, stated, 'The Iranian Revolutionary Guards targeted a ship at sea. Following this, U.S. fighter jets attacked speedboats belonging to the Iranian Revolutionary Guards in the Gulf.'
Hashem also reported that many naval personnel affiliated with the Iranian Revolutionary Guards were killed in the attack.
In a statement from the United States Central Command (CENTCOM), it was confirmed that U.S. forces conducted military intervention following the conflict.
A CENTCOM spokesperson told Fox News, 'U.S. forces conducted strikes today in southern Iran as part of legitimate self-defense to protect our troops from threats posed by Iranian forces. The targets included missile launchers and Iranian boats attempting to lay mines.'
A senior U.S. official with knowledge of the matter also told Fox News that American forces destroyed two Iranian boats identified as laying mines in the Hormuz Strait and a ground-to-air missile launcher in Bandar Abbas.
While sensitive negotiations between the U.S. and Iran continue, it is assessed that the parties are close to extending a possible ceasefire. CENTCOM emphasized that the operation in question was defensive in nature and did not constitute a violation of the ceasefire.
