Danaos Corp has ordered two more 5,300-TEU vessels from CSSC, doubling its orderbook for this size to four ships, enhancing its fleet capacity.
Danaos Corp has confirmed the construction of two additional 5,300-TEU container vessels at CSSC's Huangpu Wenchong Shipyard in China, as reported by Rotterdam's Offshore Energy. This strategic move doubles its orderbook for this vessel size to four ships.
The latest tonnage is part of the shipbuilder's series of medium-sized container vessels. The design features an optimized hull form, integrated energy-saving devices, and improved fuel efficiency, with provisions for future conversion to alternative fuels.
Danaos and CSSC have built a close working relationship in recent years, collaborating on several shipbuilding projects. This order also marks a partial return to vessel sizes that are more closely aligned with Danaos' traditional profile.
Last November, the company announced an order for six 1,800 TEU feeders, after focusing largely on mid-size and larger tonnage in the 6,000-9,200 TEU range. Danaos currently operates 75 container vessels totaling 477,491 TEU, with its orderbook now standing at 27 ships.
Most of the newbuildings have secured long-term employment and are designed to meet the latest environmental requirements. Beyond container vessels, Danaos controls 11 Capesize dry bulk units and recently invested in the Alaska LNG project, marking its entry into the energy sector.
