Suez Canal revenues rise in 2026 despite ongoing geopolitical risks and security threats from the Red Sea, highlighting trade resilience.

ISMALIYE / CAIRO – The Suez Canal, the lifeblood of global trade, has begun 2026 on a fine line between geopolitical uncertainties and economic recovery. Data released today by the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) indicates that the canal has increased its revenues compared to the previous year, although security threats from the Red Sea are keeping shipowners 'on alert.'

Threshold of 449 Million Dollars Surpassed

In a press release by the SCA President, it was emphasized that canal traffic proved to be more resilient than expected in the first quarter of 2026.

Ship Traffic: A 5.8% increase was recorded in the number of ships passing through compared to the same period last year.

Financial Performance: It was reported that total revenues reached the level of 449 million dollars, with this increase primarily attributed to the redirection of high-tonnage container ships, referred to as 'Mega Ships,' back to the canal.

Security Threats on the Table: 'Soon' Message Alarm

Despite signals of recovery, the geopolitical tension in the region continues to be the biggest concern for maritime companies.

Risk of Attack: A propaganda video released today by Iran-backed Houthis, themed 'Soon,' has led to the reinstatement of security protocols at the highest level along the Bab el-Mandeb and Suez routes.

Insurance Costs: The combination of risks in the Black Sea and Red Sea is pushing ship war risk premiums to challenge the 1% threshold, partially undermining the cost advantage of using the canal.

Industry Perspective: 'The Suez Canal continues to play a salvational role for Europe in the energy crisis, while simultaneously becoming the stage for the largest 'route gamble' in history. Companies must balance the need for time with security risks.'

New Faces of Green Transformation in the Canal

On the technology side of the news, there is an emphasis on sustainability. Giant vessels like the CMA CGM MONTE CRISTO, which has recently been delivered and operates on methanol, are expected to play a leading role in Suez transits in the coming days. These ships are seen as pioneers of the new generation fleet that aligns with the canal's carbon emission reduction strategies.

Analysts indicate that the complete return to normalcy of Suez Canal transits for the remainder of 2026 is dependent on a permanent reduction in military tensions in the region. Giants like Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd are awaiting the establishment of safe corridors to escape the fuel costs created by the Cape of Good Hope route.
