Legal proceedings launched against 'Gökbey' owners for illegal dismantling in protected Demircili Cove, Urla, after citizen reports.
In Demircili Cove, part of Urla, illegal dismantling of scrap vessels has been confirmed within a protected site area. Legal proceedings have been initiated against the owners of the cargo ship named 'Gökbey,' and administrative sanctions were imposed on the responsible parties. The ship has since been removed from the area for proper dismantling.
This illegal operation emerged in Demircili Cove, known for its pristine environment and classified as a natural protected area in İzmir. Following reports from citizens who observed the dismantling of the scrap cargo ship, investigations revealed that the operation was conducted outside the designated shipyard area and in violation of the law.
Citizens who noticed the ship being dismantled on the shore promptly reported the situation to the 112 Emergency Call Center. In response, teams from the District Gendarmerie Command and the Coast Guard Command were dispatched to the area. On-site inspections confirmed that the ship dismantling activity in the protected site was illegal.
Following the investigations, the Provincial Directorate of Environment, Urbanism and Climate Change, along with the Port Authority, intervened. Administrative sanctions were applied to the responsible parties, and a legal process was initiated against the ship owners. The scrap ship 'Gökbey' was removed from its current location and taken to a designated area for dismantling in accordance with regulations.
The Urla District Governor's Office issued a press release stating that no pollution related to asbestos or petroleum-derived substances has been detected in the area at this time. The statement emphasized that all necessary precautions would be firmly implemented based on additional assessments to be conducted. It was also noted that the process of transferring the ship to a legally compliant dismantling area is being meticulously monitored by the relevant institutions.
