Cosco Shipping receives the first AiP for enhanced EV firefighting solutions on PCTCs, marking a milestone in maritime safety technology.
Chinese operator Cosco Shipping Specialized Carriers has achieved a significant milestone by receiving the world's first Approval in Principle (AiP) certificate for enhanced firefighting safety solutions for battery-powered vehicles on pure car and truck carriers (PCTC), as reported by UK's Seatrade Maritime News.
The certificate was awarded by the China Classification Society during the Marintec 2025 convention in Shanghai. This achievement represents a breakthrough in maritime safety technology for new energy vehicles and marks the first implementation of such measures in the design of ocean-going car carriers.
This recognition underscores Cosco Shipping Specialized Carriers' leading role in ensuring emergency safety for the roll-on/roll-off (ro-ro) transport of new energy vehicles. It also reflects the broader commitment of Chinese shipping firms to establish industry standards and promote global advancements in maritime safety.
From January to October 2025, China's exports of new energy vehicles reached two million units, representing a 90.4 percent increase year on year. These vehicles accounted for 35.87 percent of total automobile exports, highlighting their significance in China's international expansion.
“Maritime transport, as the primary mode of transportation for new energy vehicle exports, requires a high level of safety and professionalism,” stated Cosco Shipping Specialized Carriers. The company emphasized that this certificate sets a benchmark for EV transport safety worldwide and will facilitate the industry's transition toward safer and greener operations.
