Cosco Shipping Libra completes a historic 106-day voyage, pioneering methanol dual-fuel shipping and showcasing retrofitting potential.
The 20,199-TEU Cosco Shipping Libra has returned to Shanghai Yangshan Port after a groundbreaking 106-day maiden voyage, becoming the world's first large containership retrofitted for methanol dual-fuel operation, reports London's Logistics Manager.
Covering 27,800 nautical miles across the Indian and Atlantic Oceans, the vessel demonstrated that retrofitting existing tonnage is a viable path to decarbonisation. The project was carried out by Cosco Shipping Heavy Industry in Shanghai.
Both main and auxiliary engines operated stably in methanol mode throughout the voyage. The trip also verified safe bunkering procedures and efficient fuel management, with energy efficiency and emission reductions aligning with projections.
The retrofit was developed through collaboration between Cosco Shipping Heavy Industry and Cosco Shipping Lines. Technical teams assessed performance and gathered crew feedback on the vessel's return to optimise future conversions.
Industry observers said the Libra provides a replicable blueprint for retrofitting large container ships. Methanol conversions offer faster compliance with tightening IMO and EU ETS rules than waiting for newbuild slots later this decade.
Cosco said the data collected will refine maintenance schedules and training for future conversions. The company aims to build a low-carbon shipping ecosystem to meet both trade volatility and environmental sustainability challenges.
