Storm Goretti leads to the loss of 24 containers from cargo ships near the Isle of Wight, prompting navigational warnings and public reminders.

Twenty-four containers fell from two cargo ships off the Isle of Wight overnight as Storm Goretti brought strong winds, reported BBC News.

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency stated that 17 containers were lost near Nab Tower, east of Bembridge. Approximately 45 minutes later, seven empty containers went overboard south of St Catherine's Point.

An MCA aircraft spotted up to six containers floating southeast of the island, while others were believed to have sunk. Navigational warnings were issued to shipping in the area.

A gust of 73.2 mph was recorded at the Needles overnight. Authorities reminded the public that any non-perishable wreck material arriving on shore must be reported to the Receiver of Wreck within 28 days or face fines of up to GBP 2,500 (US$ 3,367).

Containers also fell from the 552-TEU Baltic Klipper in the Solent off Bembridge on December 6. Thirteen of the 16 containers, mostly carrying bananas, have since been recovered in West Sussex.
