Condolence Message Regarding Seafarers Who Lost Their Lives in the Black Sea
We are following with deep sorrow the pain of the seafarers who lost their lives while fulfilling their duties as a result of the recent increase in attacks in the Black Sea.
Seafarers, who work with great dedication to ensure the uninterrupted continuity of world trade, are the unseen heroes of international maritime trade, regardless of their nationalities, flags, or the companies they serve. No seafarer should become a target of conflicts while earning their livelihood; no family should lose their loved ones due to attacks occurring while on duty.
We offer our heartfelt condolences to all seafarers who have lost their lives, and we wish urgent recovery to the injured sailors.
As the Turkish Shipowners' Association, we strongly condemn all types of attacks that threaten the safety of civilian mariners and target commercial vessels, carried out by Russia and Ukraine. The protection of commercial vessels and seafarers within the framework of the fundamental principles of international law and maritime law is an indispensable necessity, not only for the maritime sector but also for the safety and sustainability of global trade.
In the face of these tragic events, we believe it is of great importance for the global maritime community, international maritime organizations, relevant international institutions, and all stakeholders to display a united and strong stance by openly condemning these attacks; and to urgently implement concrete and effective measures aimed at ensuring the safety of commercial vessels and seafarers.
The seas should be a common space for trade, cooperation, and peace, not conflicts. Commercial vessels and the dedicated seafarers who operate them should be able to carry out their duties safely under all circumstances.
