China warns Panama of severe repercussions after a court ruling deemed CK Hutchison's port contract unconstitutional, threatening economic consequences.
China has warned Panama of 'heavy prices' after the country's Supreme Court declared Hong Kong-based CK Hutchison's contract to operate two Panama Canal ports unconstitutional, reports Reuters.
The Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office condemned the ruling as 'absurd,' 'shameful and pathetic,' and pledged to defend the interests of Chinese companies affected by the decision.
The office stated that China has sufficient means and strength to uphold a fair international economic and trade order. It warned that if Panamanian authorities 'insist on having their own way,' political and economic consequences would follow.
