China recorded more than 50 per cent growth in newly launched international air cargo routes in the first half of 2025, with cross-border e-commerce driving volumes higher, reported London's GlobalData. Data from the China Federation of Logistics & Purchasing showed 145 new cargo routes opened nationwide by 30 June, including 117 international services, up 58.1 per cent year on year. International cargo and mail shipments rose 23.4 per cent to 2.037 million tonnes.
The country's 17 cargo airlines operated 249 freighters at mid-year, with Chinese carriers' share of the international air cargo market rising 4 points to 44 per cent. The 20 cities hosting national airport logistics hubs generated over a quarter of GDP and handled more than 80 per cent of airport cargo.
CFLP chief economist Cui Zhongfu said China's outward-oriented development strategy remains unchanged. Recent moves include Shandong Airlines expanding Qingdao-Tokyo freight services and taking delivery of its fifth 737-800 Boeing Converted Freighter, the 50th such aircraft in service with Chinese operators.
