China's exports grew 5.9% in November, boosting the trade surplus to $111.7 billion, despite challenges in domestic demand and the property market.

China's exports experienced a notable increase in November, rebounding from a decline the previous month, as reported by Reuters. This growth was attributed to a low comparison base and diminishing holiday effects, surpassing market expectations.

The General Administration of Customs revealed that exports rose by 5.9 percent year-on-year in dollar terms, while imports saw a modest growth of 1.9 percent.

As exports outpaced imports, the trade surplus expanded by $21.6 billion, reaching $111.7 billion, marking the highest monthly level in the second half of the year. This export figure exceeded the 3.7 percent average forecast from a Caixin survey of economists, while imports fell short of the anticipated 3.4 percent growth.

Commentary from Hong Kong's China Economic Review highlighted that boosting domestic demand has become a top economic priority for China's leaders as they look ahead to 2026, following a slowdown in economic momentum. The Politburo's December meeting emphasized that the primary challenge lies in consumers' reluctance to spend, indicating that exports can no longer be relied upon as a consistent growth driver.

The review further noted that the property market, a crucial component of the domestic economy, remains weak and shows no signs of recovery. Although Beijing has long advocated for increasing consumption, translating these intentions into effective actions has proven challenging. More details on the government's strategy to address these issues are expected in 2026.
