THE US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) has announced US$49 million grant for the Charleston Harbour Deepening Project in the Fiscal Year 2018 Work Plan. These are critical funds that will be coupled with financial support from the State of South Carolina to further the progress of dredging the harbour to 52 feet, reported Greenville Business Magazine.
'This funding is great news for continued construction activities and timely awarding of dredging contracts for the Charleston Harbour Deepening Project,' said South Carolina Ports Authority (SCPA) chairman Bill Stern.
'The Port is appreciative to the Trump Administration, Governor McMaster, Senators Graham and Scott, and the entire South Carolina congressional delegation for their efforts to ensure the funding for the project,' he said.
Said SCPA chief executive Jim Newsome: 'The southeast needs a 52-foot harbour to efficiently handle the large containerships now calling the east coast. There are four other harbours on our coast at 50 feet of depth, and such large containerships call a network of ports.'
