Cargo Ship Heading to Georgia Caught in Fishing Nets off Beykoz

The Panamanian-flagged cargo ship "SVS Patience," measuring 89 meters in length, encountered an unexpected obstacle while sailing from Istanbul to Georgia. The vessel got entangled in fishing nets off the coast of Beykoz in the Bosphorus late on December 21, 2024.

The incident briefly disrupted maritime traffic in the Bosphorus, one of the world's busiest waterways. Upon being informed of the situation, the Directorate General of Coastal Safety dispatched two rescue vessels, "Kıyı Emniyeti 5" and "Kurtarma 5," to the site.

Thanks to the swift and meticulous efforts of the rescue teams, "SVS Patience" was successfully freed from the fishing nets. The cargo ship resumed its voyage through the Bosphorus, continuing on its course toward Georgia. Authorities reported no casualties or environmental damage resulting from the incident.

"SVS Patience," built in 2011, is a general cargo ship with a length of 90 meters and a width of 14 meters, operating under the Panamanian flag.

This event underscores the importance of careful coordination between large vessels and fishing boats, especially in busy maritime zones like the Bosphorus. Maritime authorities emphasized the need for heightened awareness to prevent similar accidents in the future.

The Directorate General of Coastal Safety commended the rescue teams for their rapid and effective response, ensuring minimal disruption to maritime traffic and safeguarding the vessel. Officials reiterated their commitment to ensuring the safety of navigation in the Bosphorus, with teams on standby 24/7 to respond to emergencies.
