Cargo ship Deniz Akay collides with museum ship Galeb in Rijeka, Croatia, during severe storm; no injuries reported.
RIJEKA / CROATIA - This morning, due to the impact of a severe storm at the Port of Rijeka in Croatia, the Barbados-flagged cargo ship 'Deniz Akay,' which lost control, collided with the world-famous museum ship 'Galeb,' associated with the former Yugoslav leader Tito.
Storm Caused Loss of Control
According to the information obtained, the 107-meter-long cargo ship 'Deniz Akay,' operated by a Turkish company, began to drift while anchored in the Port of Rijeka due to the strong winds and adverse weather conditions affecting the area.
Despite attempts to maneuver, the ship made contact with the historic 'Galeb' (Seagull), which is undergoing conversion into a museum ship.
Material Damage Occurred
Immediately after the accident, port authorities and coast guard teams were dispatched to the area. According to initial assessments, both vessels sustained material damage. There were no casualties or injuries reported in the incident. It was also reported that no fuel leak occurred, which could lead to marine pollution.
Historic 'Galeb' Ship at Risk
The 'Galeb,' which was the target of the collision, is known as the 'Floating Residence' of former Yugoslav President Josip Broz Tito. The extent of the damage to the ship, which has been undergoing a comprehensive restoration process by the Rijeka Municipality and is planned to be opened to the public as a museum, will be clarified after technical inspections.
Investigation Launched
The Croatian Ministry of Maritime Affairs, Transport and Infrastructure has initiated an investigation into the incident. The captain and crew of the 'Deniz Akay' will be interviewed, and a decision on whether the ship will continue its voyage will be made after technical checks.
