THE Canadian government expects to submit a redesign of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) in response to what is popularly regarded a newly protectionist America. Canadian trade officials, who spent August working on a draft of the proposal called 'Strengthening and Modernising the WTO,' are seeking to forge an alliance of like-minded countries to 'restore confidence in the multilateral trading system and discourage protectionist measures and countermeasures,' according to a copy of the draft obtained by Bloomberg.
Curiously, the impasse between Canada and the US in current trade negotiations is a role reversal as Canada plays protectionist against the free-trading Americans who seek unfettered access to highly restricted Canadian dairy and poultry markets.
A group of Canadian officials will gather in Geneva on September 20 to discuss the Canadian proposal and prepare the groundwork for ministerial talks scheduled to take place in Ottawa in October.
