THE US Water Resources Development Act, that provides for harbour, waterway, flood protection, and water infrastructure has been signed into law, reported the American Journal of Transportation. 'This authorises infrastructure projects developed by the US Army Corps of Engineers that will strengthen our ports, harbours, and waterways, and will create and sustain jobs,' said subcommittee chairman Garret Graves, a Louisiana Republican congressman.

'The status quo gives Washington bureaucrats job security, but it doesn't represent the priorities of the American people. We're changing that,' said Mr Graves.

'This bill is about delivering proactive solutions so that communities actually benefit from enhanced flood protection instead of having to endure decades of studies and inaction; so state, local and other folks on the ground can play a larger role in getting projects built faster and at lower costs.'

Said ranking member Democratic Congresswoman Grace Napolitano: 'I am proud to have worked in a true bipartisan manner to meet the water infrastructure needs of communities throughout America.'
