APM Terminals Lazaro Cardenas in Mexico begins Phase III expansion after completing Phase II, enhancing capacity and automation for international trade.
Maersk's APM Terminals Lazaro Cardenas in Mexico has inaugurated its Phase II expansion and immediately started construction of Phase III, reports the UK's Seatrade Maritime News.
The US$140 million Phase II project expands the terminal to 65 hectares with a capacity for two million TEU. The facility now features six electric ARMG cranes, energy-efficient shuttle carriers, and advanced traceability systems.
Managing director Beatriz Yera stated that Phase III will add 450 metres of quay, bringing the total berthing frontage to 1,200 metres. She noted that Lazaro Cardenas is the only terminal in Latin America with a fully automated container yard.
Regional managing director Leo Huisman mentioned that the expansion aligns with APM Terminals' global decarbonisation strategy, incorporating electric mobile equipment and infrastructure for automated operations.
The Phase III development, backed by more than $350 million in investment, will expand yard space and quay length to handle greater volumes of international trade, positioning Lazaro Cardenas as a major transshipment hub in the region.
