APM Terminals launches a $350M electrified terminal in Suape, boosting capacity and creating thousands of jobs in Northeast Brazil.
APM Terminals has delivered its new Suape container terminal in Pernambuco, Northeast Brazil, according to an APM Terminals press release.
The facility, representing an investment of more than US$350 million, will be the first fully electrified terminal in Latin America. Designed to raise Suape Port Complex capacity by 55 percent, it will initially handle up to 400,000 TEU annually.
A study by A&M Infra, Navarro Prado Advogados, and APM Terminals projected that the terminal could generate BRL$4.8 billion (US$940 million) in additional exports, BRL$4.9 billion in GDP, and more than 43,000 jobs across foreign trade value chains.
Brazilian Vice President Geraldo Alckmin stated that modernizing Suape meant modernizing Brazil, citing reduced costs, greater integration, and new opportunities for agribusiness and industry. Ports Minister Tome Franca added that the project reflects international confidence in Brazil's role in global trade.
Pernambuco Governor Raquel Lyra mentioned that the new terminal strengthens the state's logistics competitiveness, attracting investment and creating jobs. Armando Monteiro Bisneto, chief executive of the Suape Port Complex, called the delivery the start of a new era for logistics and economic development.
Daniel Rose, managing director of APM Terminals Suape and Pecém, emphasized that the project reflects a long-term commitment to Brazil's growth, expanding capacity in the Northeast and raising operational standards through electrification.
APM Terminals also operates at Pecem in Ceara, where it has invested for more than two decades. The company stated that the region's strategic location and export-driven economy support long-term potential, dependent on continued infrastructure expansion.
