The river cruise ship ANNA KATHARINA, carrying approximately 200 passengers and crew, collided with the wall and gate system of the Freudenau lock in Vienna. In the accident, 14 people were slightly injured, and six were taken to the hospital. There were no reports of water ingress or passengers falling overboard.
The ANNA KATHARINA struck the fixed structures of the Freudenau power plant and lock system while navigating on the Danube River at around 04:30 on the morning of July 24. As a result of the impact, many passengers on board lost their balance and fell.
Vienna's emergency services reported that 14 people were lightly injured and that six passengers were transported to the hospital as a precaution. It was confirmed that no one fell into the water from the ship and that there was no breach in the hull causing water ingress.
Significant damage occurred to the bow section of the vessel. It has not yet been clarified whether the accident was due to human error, technical failure, issues with the steering or propulsion system, or another reason related to the approach to the lock.
In maritime accident terminology, the collision of two moving vessels is classified as a 'collision,' while a vessel striking a fixed structure such as a dock, lock wall, or bridge is classified as an 'allision.'
