In 2025, orders for alternative fuel vessels hit 275, showcasing strong interest in eco-friendly shipping despite global market challenges.
As the maritime sector accelerates its green transformation, there has been a notable increase in orders for ships powered by alternative fuels in 2025. According to data from the international classification organization DNV, a total of 275 orders for alternative fuel vessels were placed throughout the year.
This figure reveals that, despite the slowdown in the global shipbuilding market, shipowners' interest in low-emission and environmentally friendly technologies remains strong. Ships powered by alternative fuels accounted for approximately 38% of the total new ship orders placed in 2025.
LNG and Methanol Stand Out
The majority of the orders were for vessels operating on LNG, while there has also been an increase in new construction projects for methanol-fueled container ships. Experts point out that due to the storage and supply advantages of methanol, its share may further increase in the coming years.
Emission Targets Have Been Determinative
Industry representatives indicate that the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) emission reduction targets, the European Union's carbon regulations in shipping, and uncertainties regarding fuel costs have directed shipowners towards alternative fuel options.
In its assessment, DNV stated, 'While new ship orders remain generally limited, the ability of alternative fuel vessels to maintain their share of total orders demonstrates that the energy transition in shipping has become structural.'
