Airbus reveals the A350F's main deck cargo door, enhancing efficiency and sustainability in air freight with innovative design and technology.
Airbus has unveiled the main deck cargo door of its A350F freighter, a composite structure designed to improve efficiency and meet future environmental standards, reported Airbus.
The door measures 4.5 metres wide with a 4.3 metre clear opening, making it the largest in commercial aviation. Airbus stated that this scale allows ultra-large items, such as turbofan engines, to be loaded in one move, cutting loading times from an hour to mere minutes.
Located in the aft fuselage, the door maintains the aircraft's centre of gravity during loading. It is built from advanced carbon fibre composites, which reduce weight and enhance durability. Overall, the A350F is constructed from more than 70 per cent advanced materials, making it approximately 35 tonnes lighter than rival freighters.
The door was manufactured at Airbus's Illescas facility in Spain, a centre of excellence for composite structures. Engineers developed a seven-frame-bay design that occupies a quarter of the rear fuselage and withstands torsion and extreme temperatures.
Moving away from hydraulics, the door employs a fully electric sliding latch and locking system, allowing it to open or close in one minute and operate safely in winds of up to 40 knots. Airbus noted that this innovation improves reliability and reduces maintenance requirements.
Assembly involves five stages, including drilling thousands of precision holes, integrating mechanisms and sensors, and conducting rigorous inspections before sealing. Airbus emphasized that this innovation sets new benchmarks for efficiency in global air freight.
The A350F, powered by Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-97 engines, can carry up to 111 tonnes over a distance of 4,700 nautical miles. Airbus claims it reduces fuel consumption and emissions by up to 20 per cent compared to current freighters and meets ICAO's 2027 CO2 standards.
The aircraft can operate with up to 50 per cent sustainable aviation fuel at entry-to-service. Airbus has already secured more than 100 firm orders for the A350F, which is now preparing for its first flight.
