Turkey reports 299 maritime accidents in a year, leading to 21 fatalities and numerous injuries, raising serious safety concerns.

The accidents occurring at sea in Turkey have reached a concerning level. According to official data released, a total of 299 maritime accidents occurred in the past year, resulting in the loss of 21 lives, while many others were injured or stranded at sea.

    Most accidents involve small vessels.

In the incidents reflected in the data from the General Directorate of Coastal Safety and the Coast Guard Command, a significant portion of the accidents involved:

    fishing boats,

    private excursion vessels,

    small commercial vessels.

Experts indicate that the increasing number of boats, lack of training, and insufficient monitoring of weather conditions are among the primary causes of these accidents, particularly in amateur sailing.

    Main causes of accidents.

Authorities state that most accidents are not due to technical failures but rather human error. The prominent reasons are as follows:

Going to sea despite bad weather conditions,

    Carrying excessive passengers or cargo,

Failure to comply with navigation rules,

    Insufficient lighting during night navigation,

    Not wearing life jackets.

Maritime experts emphasize that the increasing amateur boat traffic, especially during the summer season, exacerbates the risks.

    Accidents peak during summer months.

A large portion of the accidents occurs between May and September. With the rise in tourism and private boat usage, incidents of collisions, grounding, and engine failures are on the rise. The most intense incidents are observed along the Aegean and Marmara coasts.

“The sea does not forgive mistakes.”

Authorities are issuing an important warning to citizens: Checking the weather conditions before heading out to sea, carrying a radio, and using life jackets are vital. Neglecting safety measures, especially during short-distance trips, can lead to fatal outcomes.

Maritime safety experts highlight that using boats without training is 'as dangerous as driving an unlicensed vehicle on land,' stressing the need for increased inspections.
