A company faces a 2.3 million TL fine for illegally dismantling ships at Demircili Beach, with criminal complaints filed against responsible parties.
The Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change has imposed a fine of 2 million 346 thousand lira on a company engaged in unauthorized ship dismantling at Demircili Beach in Urla, İzmir. Additionally, a criminal complaint has been filed against those responsible for the operation. The Çeşme Port Authority has also initiated administrative proceedings regarding this matter.
During an inspection by the İzmir Provincial Directorate of the Ministry, it was discovered that a tanker-type vessel named Gökbey had been brought ashore, and dismantling operations had commenced. Several parts were cut from the ship using oxygen sources and left on the beach. The investigation revealed that the company conducting the dismantling had not obtained a 'dismantling permit' from the Çeşme Port Authority.
Both judicial and administrative investigations are underway. The Çeşme Port Authority has initiated an administrative procedure concerning the unauthorized dismantling operation, which violates the relevant article titled 'Dismantling Outside the Region' of the Ship Dismantling Regulation. Due to the improper storage of scrap parts removed from the vessel on land with a soil surface, an administrative fine of 2 million 346 thousand lira was imposed under the Environmental Law, and a criminal complaint was filed with the Public Prosecutor's Office against those responsible.
