The Rhine River's drought-induced low water levels have stranded the 135-meter 'Viking Einar' passenger ship in Cologne, disrupting river traffic.

Due to the severe drought affecting Germany, the water level in the Rhine River has dropped, causing the 135-meter 'Viking Einar' passenger ship to run aground and become stranded in Cologne.

The scorching drought gripping Germany has heightened tensions in the Rhine River. The massive 135-meter passenger ship named 'Viking Einar', while navigating in the city of Cologne, became stranded in the middle of the river as water levels fell to dangerously low levels. This unexpected incident once again highlighted the vulnerability of one of the country's most vital waterways.

WATER LEVELS DROPPED, SHIP RAN AGROUND

According to information from the Cologne Police, the bow of the ship, which ran aground during a maneuver in the Deutzer Platte area, made slight contact with the quay wall. The failure of initial attempts to salvage the ship complicated the situation further. The deployment of the Waterways and Maritime Administration, along with the water police to the area, reinforced assessments that the river's water level is critically below seasonal norms.

    RIVER TRAFFIC DISRUPTED, INVESTIGATION INITIATED

Following the incident, river traffic continued in a controlled manner, but intensive efforts are being made to remove the ship from its location. The captain of the 'Viking Einar', which is planned to be salvaged with the assistance of another vessel, has been issued an administrative fine. The ongoing drought and high temperatures across Germany are causing a significant drop in the water level of the Rhine River. This situation negatively impacts cargo and passenger transportation over the river, while cargo ships are forced to operate at lower capacities, raising economic concerns.
