APM Terminals is opening a new regional headquarters in Singapore from September, which will enable its existing Shanghai office to concentrate on China and Japan, as the company continues to strengthen operations and infrastructure in underserved high-growth Asian economies.
The move to expand its presence in the Asia Pacific comes as the region now accounts for nearly one out of three TEU by equity share handled by the company's global port, terminal and inland services network.
"The new regional headquarters in Singapore will enable us to focus on the terminals that we manage and operate in Southeast Asia and the Indian subcontinent, with the intent of continuing to improve our operational performance for the benefit of our customers," said CEO Kim Fejfer.
"The Shanghai office will host a dedicated team that will solely focus on our Chinese JV partners and the Chinese and Japanese markets which are very important to us. The office will also manage our future expansion plans in China," said CEO of the Asia-Pacific region Henrik Pedersen.
A company statement said Asian ports, including those located in the Indian subcontinent, now account for more than half of all its container throughput worldwide, with a cumulative total volume of 370 million TEU in 2011.
The terminal operator currently has interests in 18 operating facilities in Asia in six countries, which handled 10.6 million TEU in 2011, representing 31.6 per cent of the company's total container volume.
Interests in China and Japan accounted for 6.2 million TEU last year, or 18.5 per cent of the company's overall throughout. Port operations in India, Thailand, Vietnam and Malaysia, where it generally exercises more operational control in port and terminal investments, accounted for 4.4 million TEU in 2011.
