MAERSK's standalone port operator, APM Terminals' projected box shop at Lazaro Cardenas on the Pacific Mexican coast has taken delivery of three ship-to-shore quay cranes and two rail-mounted cranes.
Opening next year, the US$900 million, the semi-automated terminal will have seven quay cranes with a 24-row reach and a 750-metre quay to dock 15,000-TEU ships. It will also have a fully automated gate and on-dock rail.
The TEC2 terminal will be the most technologically advanced in Latin America, according to APMT Mexico's managing director JD Nielsen, reported American Shipper. The port itself is currently able to handle general cargo, dry bulk, liquid bulk and containerised cargo.
In addition to APM Terminals, SSA Marine and Hong Kong's Hutchison Port Holding (HPH) are expanding at Lazaro Cardenas as well.
HPH has completed the second phase of its $193 million container terminal upgrade at the port, which includes a new dock and yard, as well as the installation of seven super-postpanamax cranes and 18 yard cranes, according to BNamericas.
Also in Mexico, APMT is looking into entering the port of Veracruz, and has expressed an interest to participate in the public tender for the first container terminal, as part of the port's expansion plan, Maersk Group's CEO Nils Smedegaard Anderson said.
The company aims to eventually connect Pacific and Gulf Coast operations through intermodal rail links intersecting at its Cuautitlan Izcalli intermodal rail facility near Mexico City.

Eight years ago, there were fears of LA-Long Beach port congestion and that Lazaro Cardenas was supposed to be the safety valve through which diverted cargo would flow via Kansas City Southern Railway to the US Midwest.
While this did not materialise fully, Lazaro Cardenas did well in the trade serving the increasing affluent metropolitan area of Mexico City with its 21.1 million people.
