MAERSK's APM Terminals Vado Ligure has received its first Automated Rail Gantry Cranes for a terminal that is currently under construction in Italy, reports London's Port Technolgy International.
Six cranes arrived at the port via vessel at the new 220-metre quay - one of the first tests for the recently completed quay.
The cranes made a world-wide trip to Italy, leaving China in January - and will begin operation when the new terminal is completed in 2019.
Vado Ligure, between Genoa and Nice, is a leading fruit and container reefer terminal in the Mediterranean.
It has an annual capacity of 250,000 TEU, and 27,000 square metres of reefer warehousing 50 metres from the quay with room for up to 13,000 pallets.
In 2018, the construction work for the new platform and associated infrastructure has started and is near completion.
APMT will integrate the reefer terminal multipurpose facility with the new, semi-automated deep-sea container terminal to provide additional distribution opportunities for businesses and for shipping lines.
