CLIMATE Champion Team leader Katharine Palmer, and Global Maritime Forum chief executive Johannah Christensen declared it's time for the UN's International Maritime Organisation (IMO) to deliver on shipping decarbonisation, reports Lloyd's List.
According to the two activists, shipping can engage with countries, communities, and policymakers to raise ambitions and shape policy.
The 27th United Nations (UN) Climate Change Conference (COP 27) saw shipping's climate actions highlighted beyond expectations.
The duo's message going into COP27 was clear, the world cannot keep 1.5C alive without decarbonising shipping.
During the conference, leaders from the maritime and energy sectors showed that a transformation is possible.
Shipping was high on the agenda of more than just the maritime leaders since it was, for the first time, included in a world leader's statement from US President Joe Biden.
The world's largest green hydrogen producers and maritime leaders came together and signed a joint statement committing to green hydrogen-based fuels this decade to get on track for full decarbonisation by 2050.
The duo feel the maritime sector announcements at COP27 demonstrate that transformation is only possible if pledges and climate commitments are converted into concrete actions now.
Looking ahead, the two feel there should not be any doubt that the IMO has heeded our call for 1.5
