The "Chesham" was being towed by four tugs to a location next to Gran Canaria. Rescue crews from the Florida-based Resolve Marine managed to connect to the ship oon Aug 21, 2017. It was on its way from Norway to Thailand with a load of fertilizer last week when the crew reported rising temperatures in two cargo holds. It was planned to proceed to Las Palmas, where representatives of the cargo manufacturer were present to investigate the cargo. Before the arrival, however, it was necessary to evacuate the crew with helicopters due to the development of potentially life-threatening vapors. Subsequently a fire broke out a fire on the ship after chemical reactions that led to one large and more minor explosions in the cargo. A standby tug from Spain's Coast Guard has been on standby at the ship since it went adrift. The crew has since been flown home. Resolve Marine vessels arrived on Aug 16 and started cooling down the hull. The weather conditions as well as the fumes and heat from the fire in the cargo compartment prevented crews from boarding. The situation has now stabilized so that the towage could commence.
