FOURTEEN containers have been swept overboard in strong winds and large swells and lost while being transported onboard a CMA CGM vessel sailing from the French port of Le Havre to Port Said, Egypt.
The 5,700 TEU CMA CGM Rossini lost the containers near the island of Ushant, off northeast France, on January 4.
It's not the first time containers have been lost off the French coast over the last few months. In October, the containership Maersk Salina lost containers off Brittany.
According to a report from Lloyd's List Intelligence, during this latest incident wind speeds of 27 knots and six- to seven-metre-high swells were recorded.
The French shipping line said it immediately notified the French maritime authorities and a crisis response team was set up.
A seaplane flew over the area where the incident happened to find out whether any containers were still afloat.
CMA CGM said there were no dangerous goods in the containers, and no injuries or pollution have been reported.
Inspections were carried out on the remaining cargo and the other containers were re-secured.
Following the inspections, the ship continued its journey to the Mediterranean. The CMA CGM vessel operates on the Europe-Pakistan-India Consortium service.
