FORTY-FIVE per cent of Jawaharlal Nehru Port's (JNP) container volume goes through APM Terminals Mumbai, whose throughput last year topped 2.01 million TEU - an all time high for the port.
The Maersk standalone port operator runs one of three terminals in Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNP), India's largest container port. Last year's numbers accounted for 45 per cent of JNP's throughput, which is 20 per cent of India's.
Today, 9,000-TEUers call at APM Terminals Mumbai. The deepening of the channel last year has been credited with the increase in vessel size and container volume, reports Marine Trader of Colchester, England.
APM Terminals said the increase is putting pressure on the existing Indian port infrastructure, which must also deal with regulatory issues which have held back further infrastructure investment.
"The need of the hour is to ensure we find an acceptable solution with the authorities on the longstanding issue of the tariff that we are allowed to charge at the terminal," said APM Terminals Mumbai chairman Rizwan Soomar.
APM Terminals Mumbai has brought in a number of initiatives to help achieve faster gate turnarounds and heightened productivity. Since their implementation, gate throughput is now 5,000 TEU up from 3,500-4,000 TEU achieved before.
In February 2015, APM Terminals Mumbai set a new record for highest February volume recorded by an Indian container terminal at 164,678 TEU.
