TAIWAN's Yang Ming Marine Transport Corporation is preparing to initiate contract negotiations for the construction of five container carriers in the 15,000 TEU-class, reports Rotterdam's Offshore Energy. These vessels will operate on liquefied natural gas (LNG) as dual fuel, offering increased environmental protection.
Yang Ming announced that it has completed an open and comprehensive bidding process and is now ready to proceed with contract discussions and construction arrangements.
The company's board has granted approval for the procurement, paving the way for the finalisation of contracts.
This was initiated by the company in August 2022 when it started bidding for the construction of the ships. Yang Ming aims to acquire neopanamax container vessels with a capacity of 15,000 to 16,000 TEU.
The new vessels must comply with Tier III NOx regulations and meet the requirements of Phase 3 of the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI). Phase 3 necessitates a minimum 30 per cent reduction in emissions, with certain ship types targeting a 50 per cent reduction.
The dual-fuel ships will be powered by LNG, as well as very low sulphur fuel oil (VLSFO) and marine gas oil (MGO), as specified in the tender.
Yang Ming seeks vessels with an endurance of 23,500 nautical miles in gas mode and around 12,400 nautical miles in fuel mode.
In terms of delivery dates, the first vessel is expected to be completed and delivered in the first half of 2025, while the final vessel is slated for completion by the end of the first half of 2026.
Yang Ming had previously announced its intention to construct LNG-fueled 15,000 TEU vessels in April.
This move signifies the company's position as the first shipping company in Taiwan to own and operate such environmentally-friendly ships.
