THE Port of Long Beach posted a 5.7 per cent year-on-year decline in container throughput 2019 to 7.62 TEU, while the adjacent Port of Los Angeles suffered a 17 per cent drop to 9.3 million TEU.
Long Beach imports fell 8.3 per cent to 3,758,438 TEU. Exports were down 3.3 per cent to 1,472,802 TEU, while empties fell 2.8 per cent to 2,400,792 TEU.
In December, volume fell 10.3 per cent year on year to 665,261 TEU. Imports were down 13.4 per cent to 323,231 TEU while exports increased 10.6 per cent to 125,395 TEU. Empties dropped 15.1 per cent to 216,635 TEU.
Last year, the ports both saw a rush of cargo as importers sped up shipments from China in order to get ahead of an expected jump in tariff rates. December 2018 was the Port of LA's busiest month in history.
'In the face of lagging exports due to international trade tensions and tariff uncertainties, the Port of Los Angeles has maintained strong momentum and kept cargo flowing,' port executive director Gene Seroka said.
Said Long Beach port executive director Mario Cordero' 'At the end of the day, we need to be ready for whatever may come. We need to compete, we need to innovate, we need to lead. And most of all, we need to collaborate.'
