HYUNDAI Merchant Marine (HMM) is to launch the world's largest containerships of 24,000 TEU on the Asia-Europe trade lanes, starting from April.
The South Korean carrier will deploy twelve 24,000-TEU mega ships that are under construction at Samsung Heavy Industries and Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME), aiming to add one vessel per week.
The container shipping line will commence its services as an official member of The Alliance at the same time. It will share loading space with Germany's Hapag-Lloyd, Japan's ONE and Taiwan's Yang Ming of The Alliance.
HMM uses PSA HPNT Terminal (wharf 4) of Busan New Port as its home port. The shipping company owns half the terminal. The rest of The Alliance's fleet handle containers at PNC Terminal (wharf 2) at Busan New Port.
HMM is expected to make a decision later this year on whether the 24,000-TEU giant ships will call at HPNT Terminal or PNC Terminal.
