The Suez Canal Axis is 72-kilometre project that runs part way along the existing canal, but it also involves 37 kilometres of dry digging and 35 kilometres of expansion and deepening.
"The new waterway will be inaugurated on August 6," head of the Suez Canal Authority Mohab Mameesh told reporters in the canal city of Ismailiya.

"The New Suez Canal is more than just a new waterway and an astonishing feat of engineering. It is a catalyst for the Egyptian people which will unleash a renewed sense of pride and a more prosperous future," said SCA chairman Mohab Mameesh.
"The project is more than 80 per cent complete, and climbing as we speak, with more than 210 million tons of sand excavated, so our attention is now turning to the celebration of this achievement with the Egyptian people, as well as sharing news of Egypt's gift to the world far and wide," said Admiral Mameesh.
It was not immediately clear when the new canal section would be effectively open for business, noted AFP.Egyptian president Abdel Fattah al-Sisi launched the project in August 2014 and expected to have it done in one year.
