CHITTAGONG port has reached a new milestone after handling three million TEU in 2019, a development attributed to private operators for increasing their capacity.
'A number of projects have increased the port's inner berth capacity,' said Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) secretary Omar Faruk.
Besides, construction of a new north yard beside Rubi cement factory and procurement of heavy and modern equipment helped break all previous records of container handling,' said Mr Faruk.
'The CPA has imposed strict limits regarding how long a ship can stay at the port to ensure speedy loading and unloading of containers in order to reduce container congestion and improve productivity,' he said.
Sources said the New-mooring Container Terminal (NCT) and Chittagong Container Terminal (CCT), the two terminals of the Chittagong port, handled a total of 1.7 million TEU this year. Saif Power Tec Ltd is the operator of the NCT and CCT, reported Dhaka's Financial Express.
Said Saif Power Tec managing director Tarafdar Ruhul Amin: 'We are trying to increase our capacity as well as the capacity of Chittagong sea port for handling containers.'
In September, the port operators handled a total of 292,455 TEU, the highest in a month.
A total of 3,747 ships were berthed at Chittagong sea port in 2018, up from 3,370 in 2017. At the same time, the stay time of ships at the port has also come down.
Presently, off-dock container-carrier ships stay at Chittagong port for only 35 hours, while export container-carrier ships leave the port only within an hour.
