Ukrainian President Zelensky proposes sharing maritime corridor security experience with Gulf nations amid rising tensions in the Strait of Hormuz.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that his country is ready to share its experience in maritime corridor security, which has been tested in war, with Gulf countries. Zelensky stated that the transportation system developed by Ukraine in the Black Sea, which is protected against Russian threats, bears similarities to the existing risks in the Strait of Hormuz.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, Zelensky said that Ukraine has offered technical support to the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries regarding the reopening of disputed sea routes.

    “We shared our experience.”

In remarks following his visit to Qatar and the United Arab Emirates last week, Zelensky highlighted the energy crisis and stated: “They know they can rely on our expertise in this area, and we discussed this in detail. We shared our experiences regarding the Black Sea corridor and its operation. They understand that our armed forces are extremely effective in opening this corridor.”

    High-risk situation in Hormuz.

The security situation in the Strait of Hormuz is becoming increasingly complex. It is reported that despite ongoing conflicts for approximately 30 days, the U.S. has not been able to ensure complete security in the region.

It is stated that Iran has deployed a limited number of naval mines and has the capacity to target commercial vessels with drones, warships, and missiles. Due to the narrow structure of the strait, it is noted that large areas can be controlled with different weapon systems, while the passage largely depends on Iran's control.

    Ukrainian model: Layered defense.

Ukraine's solution is based on a security architecture that combines layered air defense systems with unmanned maritime vehicles. This system neutralizes aerial threats while also minimizing military risks on the surface.

Igor Fedirko, CEO of the Ukrainian Defense Industry Council, stated that the country has developed a “comprehensive systemic solution” to protect its maritime areas. It is mentioned that unmanned maritime vehicles are more cost-effective and their loss is more tolerable compared to manned escort vessels.

Missile threat and need for Patriot systems.

On the other hand, Iran’s anti-ship ballistic missiles pose a more complex threat than those encountered in Ukraine. Advanced missile defense systems are required to counter such attacks.

It is noted that GCC countries possess U.S.-made Patriot air defense systems and PAC-3 interceptor missiles, but these systems are deployed in different regions.

    Zelensky's 'swap' proposal.

Zelensky proposed the supply of PAC-3 interceptor missiles, which Kiev urgently needs, in exchange for sharing Ukraine’s maritime and air defense experience.

The production of PAC-3 missiles, which have a unit cost of approximately 4 million dollars, is limited to about 60 units per month.
