AT the end of July Worldwide Flight Services (WFS) opened its first cargo terminal in Italy at Milan-Malpensa Airport, where it previously only provided documentation and cargo operations supervision services for American Airlines and China Cargo Airlines. The terminal can process 47,000 tonnes of freight annually and combines 5,000 square metres of warehouse space with a 3,000-square metre ramp area and 800 square metres of office space. As well as being equipped with the latest cargo handling and ground support equipment, it includes a cool area for temperature-controlled shipments.
The Milan-Malpensa terminal's launch customer American Airlines signed a new extended contract with WFS earlier this year. The facility will also provide offline-handling services for other WFS customers, reported New York's Air Cargo World.
'This is the first new cargo facility to open in Milan-Malpensa since 2004 and is part of a 10-15 year commitment by WFS to grow our presence at the airport, where total cargo volumes rose 7.5 per cent in 2017 to 490,000 tonnes,' said WFS managing director Massimiliano Introini.
'This investment makes WFS the only international on-airport cargo handling operator in Italy,' he said.
