The US House has passed a bill to restrict Chinese access to advanced AI chips via cloud services, enhancing export control measures.

The US House of Representatives has passed legislation to block Chinese access to advanced American AI chips through cloud services, reports Caixin.

The Remote Access Security Act was approved on January 12 with strong bipartisan backing, passing 369-22 after clearing the House Foreign Affairs Committee unanimously.

The measure expands export control rules to cover remote access to sensitive technologies via the internet or cloud platforms, not just physical shipments or sales.

Lawmakers stated that the bill aims to prevent Chinese entities from bypassing existing restrictions by using cloud computing to access advanced US chips.

Under the new rules, such access will require licensing regardless of the user's physical location, tightening oversight of critical technologies.
